An investigation is underway after five people fell from a highway vehicle overnight and was hit and killed by other vehicles passing by, officials say.

At about 10pm on Saturday, California Highway Patrol officials responded to reports of being hit by multiple vehicles in the southbound highway lane just north of Tustin Ranch Road.

Officers and paramedics arrived and declared that the victim had died at the scene.

The victim’s identity was not immediately provided. Preliminary reports from the CHP Incident Log mentioned those with female pronouns, but authorities were unable to confirm or provide the KTLA with factors identifying overnight.

Officers quickly closed all lanes and requested a coroner on the scene. At least two lanes resumed at 12:30am

Details are limited, and CHP said it is unclear whether the person fell, jumped, or pushed out of the car. It was not yet known whether they were the driver or passengers of the vehicle.

No arrests had been reported as of 8:30am on Sunday, and the CHP said it was unclear whether the driver had left the area. However, all the vehicles that hit the victim remained at the scene.

Nancy Fontan and Sam Bader contributed to this report.
