President Donald Trump is calling for an immediate end to the trial of former Brazilian president, President Jia Bolsonaro.
Brazilian leaders are facing investigations and upcoming trials that he accused of leading him of taking office in an attempt to a coup after the 2022 election loss. Earlier this week, Bolsonaro’s son Eduardo was meeting at the White House.
He later said in a video posted on social media that “a decision has been made” regarding the possibility of sanctions against Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court Judge Alexandre des Moreise.
“I have seen the terrible treatment you are receiving at the hands of an unfair system that opposed you. This should be over soon!” Trump wrote in a letter he sent to Bolsonaro.

Last week, Trump threatened a 50% tariff on products from Brazil in a letter to the country’s president citing an ongoing lawsuit against Bolsonaro.
In November, federal police submitted an 884-page report to Brazilian prosecutor Paulo Gonette, detailing the scheme in which Bolsonaro and 33 people joined a plan to remain in power despite losing to current President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva. They argue that it involves systematically embracing distrust among the masses of the electoral system, drafting laws to give conspiracy a veneer of legality, and oppressing the brass of top troops to incite riots in the capital.
The Judiciary Committee of Brazil’s Supreme Court accepted the charges against Bolsonaro in March and ordered the former leader to endure the trial. All five judges agreed to accept the charges, including a plot to poison Bolsonaro’s successor and kill the Supreme Court judge.

Brazilian law states that convicts of a coup are sentenced to a maximum of 12 years. When combined with other fees, you could face decades behind the bar.

In his letter to Bolsonaro, Trump said it was his “honest hope” for the Brazilian government to change course, stop attacking political enemies, and end their ridiculous censorship regime.
“I watch a lot,” Trump added.
On his part, Bolsonaro denied the fraud and told reporters, “I have no concerns about the accusations, zero.”

The Washington Post reported Thursday that the US is considering impose sanctions against Judge Moraes, who is leading the lawsuit against Bolsonaro, according to four sources familiar with the situation. The sanctions will be under the Magnitsky Act, which will alopecine on the US to impose sanctions on foreigners accused of corruption, according to sources spoken in the Post.
Trump vowed to retaliate after threatening Brazil’s 50% tariffs on a lawsuit against his successor, Lula.
“Without negotiations, the reciprocal relationship law works. If he charges 50 (% tariff) from us, we charge 50 from them,” Lula said according to the Associated Press. “Respect is good. I like to offer mine and I like to receive it.”
