Two men have been arrested and charged in connection with the brutal 2024 murder of a 42-year-old active U.S. Marine from Los Angeles County, officials said.

The violence occurred outside a bar in Bellflower at around 2am on May 28, 2024, according to a news release from the LA County District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors allege that 21-year-old Long Beach resident Damali Kensey and 28-year-old Inglewood resident Jameel Williams are cousins.

The 42-year-old driver has not been identified, authorities noted.

Deputies for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the site along with paramedics from the LA County Fire Department and declared that the husband and father of the three-year-old boy, Chounthala, had died at the scene.

“Investigators believe that Chonstara is an innocent victim of these meaningless violence,” Lt. Col. Patricia Thomas said.

Even two months after the fatal attack, detectives urged the LA County Board of Supervisors to provide a $20,000 reward for the case, even if there was a lead that included an account of the suspect involved.

The 42-year-old soldier is due to retire later in the year and was planning to become a stay-at-home father, his grieving wife said at a press conference announcing her pay.

It is unclear how the detectives linked Kency and Williams to a violent attack, or whether the cousin was arrested or if the authorities received hints that led to the arrest.

Both men have since been charged with one count of murder, each in custody on $2 million bail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 18th. If convicted, Kency and Williams face the largest life sentence in state prisons.
