In March last year, more than 1,000 people gathered for a picnic on the lawns of the San Francisco Lawn Lawn Museum. Specifically, a cake picnic – that was the actual entry policy for the event. The shirt and shoes are fine. Do you have any cakes? No entry. After all, this event may actually head to Los Angeles.
Although no specific dates have been officially announced, the event just listed Los Angeles as a tour city on the website here, so I imagine the details will be coming soon.
Organizer and Baker Elisa Sunga encourages stakeholders to RSVP on the Cake Picnic website. If a date, time, or location is reserved, the guest will receive a ticket purchase link. Sunga is positive in saying that due to the popularity of the event, all RSVPs do not guarantee entry.
A cake picnic sounds just like that. This is a touring cake festival that celebrates different types of sweets. Tickets are just $15 pops and cost the cake you bring.
Sunga started last year’s festival as a humble cake exchange, gathering with friends and tasting what everyone had literally brought to the table.
“In the early fantasies of this event, it was a small, intimate picnic of 15 new friends who formed a circle at Golden Gate Park,” she says on the official Cake Picnic website.
After posting her first event on the Partiful Invite app, she got a bigger return than expected. Since then, she takes the cakewalk down the road and soon takes over London, New York and San Francisco (again).
She also votes in cities like Austin, Chicago, Mexico City and Paris to see if she’s interested.
It was cut into a spread at the Legion of Honor Art Museum last month. There, rows of tables wearing white tablecloths are set topped with sponge cakes, fan fetti, chocolate mouse, butter cakes, upside down cakes and cake stands featuring elaborate multi-tier beauty. Like all Instagrammable activities, the phone first ate 1,387 cakes before guests were hamed in a sugary buffet, filling their pastry boxes with their hearts.
