A tragic incident in Orange County has devastated family and loved ones after the death of a seriously injured young driver Monday afternoon.
The Laguna Beach Police Station said at 4:14pm, crew members were dispatched to report an injured traffic collision on the Coast Highway between Wesley and Montage Resort Drive.
However, a preliminary investigation revealed that no collision occurred on the highway, but instead began resting there after a plunge down a nearby embankment.
Police say the young permit driver, whose age or gender is not revealed, was driving with an adult male passenger in the upper parking lot of Gerson’s market as the vehicle plunged into the edge of the structure in violation of a fence barrier.
Details are limited. Officials did not immediately reveal what led the driver to leave the lot or how far it had descended onto the ground.
After falling from the structure, the vehicles continued down the embankment before landing on the coastal highway.
Police said the driver was “seriously injured” and was taken to Mission Viejo’s mission hospital for treatment.
“Tradically, the adult male passenger in the vehicle was declared dead at the scene,” the department’s release said. “The Laguna Beach Police Station expresses the deepest sadness of the dolphins to the families and loved ones affected by this tragic incident.”
Police did not explicitly say whether the driver and passengers were family members.
The cause of the fatal conflict remains under investigation, and officials said additional details will be made public as they become available.
